Sometimes inspiration comes from surprising places:

My sister bought me a ceramic dragon. He burns incense cones.

Here he is sitting on top of our log burner. One day, he had an accident and a story was born. That short story became The Fire Dragon and was published in Woman’s Weekly Fiction Special in November 2012.

I loved the magazine artwork. As the story was set in Languedoc, art editor Jane Stone came up with a superb illustration.

  2. Having told you that I didn’t like short stories, I absolutely loved this one. It is so beautifully observed, and your main character is compelling in her quandry. Well done!
